Rare and fabulous Antique Wood Marquetry Milk Glass Lined Humidor Cigar Box. Beautiful variety of rich wood inlays and joining and comes complete with a working key and even a little leather pouch to keep the key in so it’s not lost. As to maker, a close examination reveals a tiny round brass tab on the center bottom of the back with the name, “Cross” on it (see photo). The box was found in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, and Cross Pen Company started in 1846 in nearby Rhode Island making gold and silver casings for pens and pencils but it’s a mystery it it was made in full or part them. There is a light oval area on the bottom that once appears to have had a sticker or plaque to identify it. Condition is excellent with caveat that a small portion of inner right side milk glass panel liner is missing (see photo) although doesn’t show when the box is open or affect functionality. The box is very rare, distinct, and probably from the late 1800s to 1920s. A quality raised brass applied initial (ENA) provides an extra measure of elegance. There is a number on the bottom, “214” and it is in an older style. Use this amazing box for cigars, teas, or treasures, originally designed to impress and bespeak class and prestige and it still does even more as a beautifully preserved relic from a gilded age. 12″ long, 8 1/8″ deep, 4 1/2 high.
