PALMER COX BOY WITH CAP MAJOLICA Tobacco Jar Antique Pottery Humidor c1920
PALMER COX BOY WITH CAP MAJOLICA Tobacco Jar Antique Pottery Humidor c1920. This is a rare antique Austrian Majolica Tobacco Jar known as the PALMER COX BOY WITH CAP. This two-piece tobacco jar, or humidor, is modeled in deep relief; the hand painting, décor and glaze are very well done. The subject is a well-attired Boy Tobacco Jar. This well-dressed boy wears a flat cap with front brim, a collared shirt and bowtie. The underside of the lid has a recessed area. On the top, the inside is glazed, and underside is glazed; the rim is glazed. On the base, the top rim is glazed, the inside of the underside base is glazed, the underside bottom is unglazed, and the rim foot is unglazed. The tobacco jar has colors including a background decorated with tan, lavender pink, blue, green, light brown, and off-white. The estimated date is circa 1920. The underside has the impressed marks 3266 and 27. This PALMER COX BOY WITH CAP Tobacco Jar Antique is in good condition; noting there is a 0.6 Inch glaze loss on the top of the hat with some addition loss on the inside of the top of the hat, and a 0.4 Inch loss on the underside of the lid with some additional loss on the inside of the top of the hat. Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, typical crazing, minor glaze losses, firing flaws, and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no other chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. It is noted that old majolica is not inherently “perfect” – pieces were still mold formed in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over. This isn’t damage- this is part of the history of old pottery and how it was made. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. Please note photos have been taken in indirect sunlight; therefore, reflections and lighting spots may appear, but do not necessarily indicate defects. Dimensions: 5.2 In. Tall X 4.3 In. Wide X 4.9 In. Weight: 15.3 Oz. This tobacco jar is a famous Palmer Cox Brownie. Brownies were first drawn in 1883 by Palmer Cox. Brownies were characters in a series of children’s stories. 1887’s “The Brownies”, their book, was a collection of fourteen Brownies stories, the first Brownie book published. They are characterized by large round eyes, downturned mouths, and skinny legs. Toys, books, dinnerware, figurines, and other objects were made with the Brownies as part of the design. This is European Art Pottery majolica art pottery from Austria or Czechoslovakia. This style includes production techniques whereby enamel glazes and decorations are hand applied and worked in stages upon a pottery form and fired several times in a kiln.
