In the 1800’s the wood carving industry of Switzerland started in the town of Brienz. By the end of the 1800’s it had become the driving force for this industry in Switzerland and Germany. Swiss wood carvers became world renowned and featured at many international exhibitions. In Europe, Black Forest carvings (wares) became a symbol of luxury and wealth. The finest pieces of Black Forest carving were often found in Royal collections and elite collector’s homes (usually Victorian world travelers).

Please throughly look over all pictures of the item before purchasing! This is a Black forest carving of a Bear Humidor. It’s old, potentially Early to mid 1900s. Overall its in good condition with some defects to be noted. There’s some wear/nicks on the fingers, one strap going to the basket is cracked and theres several cracks elsewhere that are most likely due to the age of the wood. The bear was definitely used for his purpose as a humidor and therefore has some dust on him despite a good cleaning. This is a very unique piece and a great addition for someone who collects wood carvings or a tobacco enthusiast. Reach out with any questions, comments or concerns! Standing Black Forest Bear Humidor with Ashtray: Swiss Woodcarving.

This beautifully carved wooden tobacco humidor showcases the detailed craftsmanship typical of the Black Forest tradition, believed to originate from early 20th-century Germany. Each side of the box features intricate floral designs and profile portraits in a Renaissance style, all hand-carved in relief. The top of the box is adorned with complementary floral carvings and includes a central knob for easy removal. The lid lifts off completely and reveals an unlined wooden interior-originally intended for tobacco storage, though it also functions well as a decorative box for small keepsakes, jewelry, or collectibles. Crafted from solid wood with warm, aged patina, the piece remains in very good vintage condition. Felt remnants on the base suggest it was designed to rest on a tabletop without scratching the surface. Removable lid with carved knob. Hand-carved Renaissance-style portraits and floral motifs. Believed to be German, Black Forest-style. This humidor is both decorative and functional, perfect for collectors of tobacciana, antique woodwork, or European folk art.
