Rare CAC Lenox Sterling Silver Overlay Tobacco Jar Humidor. With’Blooming Nicotiana Tabacum’ (Cultivated Tobacco Plant) Motif. Antique Tobacco Jar Humidor by Ceramic Arts Company/Lenox Inc. Of Trenton, NJ, with a Rare Tobacco Plant Motif – a Beautiful Sterling Silver’Blooming Nicotiana Tabacum’ (Cultivated Tobacco Plant) Overlay by La Pierre Mfg Co. On the opposite side is a Sterling Silver Overlay Monogrammed Shield with the overlapping calligraphic initials’SWL’. The barrel-shaped porcelain tobacco jar/humidor is in great condition in an attractive tri-color glaze finish – dark brown, moss green, and orange sunset. The sterling overlay is intact, except for two tiny tobacco leaf tips at the bottom of the plant that aren’t very noticeable. Note that the sterling has lifted slightly where the leaf tips broke – likely caused by careless polishing of the sterling overlay. There’s also a visible’crease’ in the sterling tobacco leaves along the right side (see pics). The wonderful antique work-of-art measures 6-1/8″ high with a 5-1/2″ diameter at its widest bulge. Its overall weight is 2 lbs unpacked. With the exception of the crease & broken leaf tips, the Overall Condition, commensurate with its age of 120+ years & use over that timeframe, would be VG++. But with the overlay damage, the Lenox tobacco jar/humidor with the rare tobacco plant motif is still considered a very nice piece, rated as a Good+. Being offered here at a reasonable. Hard Paste Porcelain Blank. Handpainted Great Horned Owl. Humidor or Biscuit Jar. Arts & Crafts and/or Art Deco Style. Is a hard past porcelain blank that was handpainted a dark chocolate almost black matte color with gilded detailing. There are three centered designs that depict a Great Horned Owl surround by leaves. A gilded stripe / border comes out of each design and goes out to the top & bottom edges of the jar, as well as around the center of the jar touch each owl design. The lid is a large handled top that allows for a small sponge on the interior for placement in use as a humidor. We believe this is original to this piece. The handled top is gilded and is also painted the dark blackish matte color with a gilded border around the edge. History – In the late 1880s through the 1940s, a popular amateur hobby/craft was in vogue, and known as “china painting or decorating”. The items used for decorating originated as “Porcelain Blanks” (white porcelain) and were often manufactured in Europe (France, Bavaria, Austro-Hungarian Empire) and imported into the US and Canada for people to decorate as part of this craft movement. No artist signature is seen and no porcelain maker insignia is found. An incised number “4245” can be seen. An small corner of an old label can be seen on the base as well. We can’t tell what this was. We do believe this was manufactured c. Size: Base alone measures approx. 5-5/8″ tall x 4-3/4″ across at the top. 7-1/4 tall with the lid. No chips, cracks, repairs, crazing, stains can be seen. Both the matte finish and gilded paint show wear from use and age, although there are spots where the gilding is bright and shiny. The artists painted the gilding onto the unglazed base edge and it has worn off from age and wear. This piece was wiped off carefully with a mild soap and water. This set has been wiped off with mild cleaner. This is a great piece for the tobacciana collector, the biscuit jar collector and those that love owls. Very unique with its creative artistry. On offer is this very nice Heinz Humidor made by R H Macy & Co. With a Hunting Motif showing a dog and stag and some trees. Marked Sterling on Bronze, measures 6 1/4″ H x 6 3/4″ W. In very good condition, see pictures. Weighs 2 pounds 3 ounces. Heintz Art Metal Shop used the letters HAMS in a diamond as a mark. By 1906 it had become the Heintz Art Metal Shop. It remained in business until 1930. The company made ashtrays, bookends, boxes, bowls, desk sets, vases, trophies, and smoking sets of bronze with the silver decoration applied by a process patented in 1912. The best-known pieces are made of copper, brass, and bronze with silver. In 1902, Otto Heintz designed and manufactured copper items with colored enamel decorations under the name Art Crafts Shop. Some pieces had a colored patina of green, tan, brown, or red. Similar pieces were made by Smith Metal Arts and were marked Silver Crest. Some pieces by both companies were unmarked.
