This is an antique Black Forest Cigar Casket or Case. It was carved by a highly skilled craftsman/artist in Switzerland or Germany probably between 1860 and 1900. On the top are a carved pair of pheasants, a hen and a rooster. Around the sides, back, and top are carvings of foliage, flowers, and geometric designs. The front of the Casket has a locking door which lifts up and there is a carved tray which is used to serve cigars to guests. The key and latch still work. The only flaw we noted with the Casket was that the bottom is slightly warped so that it places a great deal of stress on the latch if forced to lock. Also, only one tray was found with it and it likely held three when crafted. It is 7.25 inches long, 6.5 inches wide, and 6.5 inches from the bottom of the feet to the to of the carved rooster pheasant. It weighs one pound, 5 ounces. We always look for Black Forest Caskets when in France and have a few available in addition to this one. This one is so unusual for many reasons: There were not a lot of Cigar Caskets ever made. Ones that survive are likely to have some damage to the box or the fragile carvings. On this one the carvings appear to us to be undamaged. And, It is made for smaller cigars, possibly Cheroot types of cigars. What an elegant way to offer a cigar to friends though… Or just place it in an office or den for a reminder of a time when it was fashionable to offer a cigar to guests.
