This is a beautiful majolica humidor or covered bowl, with a figural aspect, an Arab in traditional Arabic dress, who is sitting on top of the humidor as if he were taking part in a conversation in which everyone is sharing a tobacco pipe and passing it around. It dates to about 1910, give or take a few years and was likely made in France or a little north of France. There are many colors and they are all quite lovely blues, pinks, reds, yellows, browns, and greens. On one side of the bowl section is a basket-weave pattern and on the other are two crossed smoking pipes with above and below them are the words “Old Friends, ” presumably the friends with which he is sharing a friendly pipe. It is in perfect condition, with no chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs of any kind. There is what might look like a lid rim chip in the very first picture to the right of the lid, but it is not a chip. It is a firing defect, if one could call it a defect. I see it as just part of the high temperature firing process of lead glazed majolica. 7.5 inches tall. 4.5 inches diameter. Great Piece and great for any collection of majolica or smoking peraphernalia! Or just a stand alone for your shelf, desk, nightstand or whatever!
