Rare circa 1880s Tobacco Jar With Embossed Boar and Hunting Dogs. Marked on the bottom C&H, which is attributed to Cumberlige & Humphreys of Tunstall. This could be an early piece before they moved to Tunstall. The original surface appears to be a type of paint, rather than a baked-on glaze. It has a green tint that suggests it was made to look like bronze. It is not solid black and has a matte finish. There are a few minor chips on the rim that were darkened to blend-in with the original surface and there are just some tiny fleabites scattered here and there, which are little white specks. The lid has an old repair on the underside, around the inner rim. It is not visible unless you remove the lid and turn it over, and then look really closely. The embossed details have collected dust over the years, so this will need a careful cleaning. Measures about 8″ tall x 5-1/4″ diameter. Inside, the jar is 5-1/4″ tall x 4-1/4″ diameter.
