Offered is an antique Austrian (Germany) terra cotta figural tobacco jar. The jar depicts perhaps a Japanese Samurai, or a devil or demon, with a large cicada insect on his head, which acts as the handle or finial to lift the lid of the tobacco jar… This item dates to the 1890’s and if not Austrian, then certainly Continental European. It is unmarked, but signed illegibly inside the lid where the humidification sponge would be placed, as shown. This piece does have some chips and repairs consistent with age and normal use, as shown in the photographs. The jar / humidor with lid is 7 1/2″ tall and 5″ across the base.
