Antique Austrian Terracotta Tobacco Jar and Cover in the Shape of a Dog’s Head. It is numbered and reads 451. There is a makers mark but very difficult to discern but appears to be SC or SN or SO or possibly CS. Thick Collar and what look like mutton chops hanging over the front lip. The Top of His Head Lifts Off Like a Toupee. There is wear commensurate with age for this piece but only a small chip in the right ear at the top, bottom edge of right mutton chop and front right of the collar rim below the mouth. There is also an old chip on the bottom back of the rim of the collar of the dog. There is a small seam on the lid at the back of the piece but i cannot discern that it is a crack rather than a firing line from when it was made. Does not appear to be a through and through. Displays Beautifully, So Much Character! I have not found this piece but several similar in the form of a poodle and terrier. A Great Piece for the Tobacciana or Dog Collector.
