Antique 1890s Organ Grinder Monkey & Pipe Red Coat Majolica Tobacco Jar Austria. This item is in good. Lease see pictures as they are part of the description. This is a nice vintage/antique hard to find anthropomorphic monkey grinder tobacco pottery humidor/jar. This does have areas of damage, pictured. A few chips on the pipe, one under the lid, and a stress crack down the center. This is very old from the late 1800’s according to my research. AIR-TIGHT boldly emb on front…. 1429 1ST DIST PA 50 bold emb on bottom (indicating this jar held 50 cigars)….. Hand blown in mold… Ground threaded wide mouth collar with original unembossed tin lid…. 5″tall x 4 7/8″across lid…. Excellent shiny nice condition with no chips or damage. A nice clean cigar jar. This scarce 1890s paper label “Chimo” 50 cigar humidor tin is in fair condition with some small superficial rust spots on the bottom, a dent on the lid edge and some age related paper chips and discoloration. This very attractive bright red and green tin features an image of a jolly friar smoking a cigar. The cigars were manufactured by C. Myers & Company, York County, PA. In Factory 1190, 1st District, PA. The company’s slogan boasted There was never a better cigar made. Here’s a real pretty amethyst glass antique cigar jar or advertising humidor over 110 years old from Michigan….. It has its original metal screw on lid! 722 FIRST DISTRICT MICHIGAN (boldly emb on front in circle slug plate). 50 CIGARS bold emb on bottom. Paneled jar with wide mouth threaded lip…. Original metal lid fits perfect….. 5″tall x 5″across lid…. Excellent shiny nice condition with only one smooth open bubble “chip” on top of lip; no other chips or damage. The beautiful amethyst or purple color of this glass is a result of the presence of manganese in the glass, which was a decolorizer to turn the glass clear. Glass that contains manganese, when exposed to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, causes the glass to turn amethyst. Some of my amethyst bottles and glass are purpled from years of exposure to natural sunlight. Others have been purpled with the use of strong UV lights in a boxand some have been purpled by running them through a water sterilization plant, which is a safe and permanent process which does the same thing as many years of exposure to natural sunlight, except much faster. To those “purists” who falsely believe that glass cannot turn this deep amethyst color naturally, I could take you to places where bottles and glass have turned this same shade of purple from being in the sunlight for many years.
