A beautiful deep amethyst glass antique tobacco cigar jar over 110 years old with its original 1900 dated glass lid….. The patent date is faint but I can make it out barely… PATENTED AUG 23 1900 (emb on underside of original glass lid)…. Square jar with flat oval window panels…. Small sunken vertical oval panels around the neck….. Notched ears on each side of neck……. 3 5/8″tall (5 1/4″counting lid)… The original matching lid has a square hollow knob top with oval panels matching the oval sides of jar. Excellent shiny nice condition with only one small shallow chip on top rim of jar. Lid has a small chip on each corner of the raised square base of hollow knob handle; Jar and lid are both sparkling clean with no haze. The beautiful amethyst or purple color of this glass is a result of the presence of manganese in the glass, which was a decolorizer to turn the glass clear. Glass that contains manganese, when exposed to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, causes the glass to turn amethyst. Some of my amethyst bottles and glass are purpled from years of exposure to natural sunlight. Others have been purpled with the use of strong UV lights in a boxand some have been purpled by running them through a water sterilization plant, which is a safe and permanent process which does the same thing as many years of exposure to natural sunlight, except much faster. To those “purists” who falsely believe that glass cannot turn this deep amethyst color naturally, I could take you to places where bottles and glass have turned this same shade of purple from being in the sunlight for many years.
