SKULL WITH CAP & BOOK Tobacco Jar Antique Majolica Humidor C1920 Memento Mori
Tobacco Jar Antique Majolica Pottery Humidor. This is a rare antique Austrian Majolica Tobacco Jar known as the SKULL WITH CAP Tobacco Jar. This two-piece tobacco jar, or humidor, is modeled in deep relief. And glaze are very well done. The subject is a well-done, a. Esting on a book. The Skull’s colorful brimmed cap with a beanie on top forms the lid top of the tobacco jar. The underside of the lid has a recessed area to put a damp sponge and is nicely fitted on the matching base. The lower half is the skull head propped up on a colorful book. On the top lid (cap), the inside is unglazed, and underside is glazed; the bottom rim edge is unglazed. On the base, the top rim is glazed, the inside is glazed, the underside base is glazed, and the underside rim foot is unglazed. The tobacco jar is decorated with stylized accents, and colors including a background decorated with pink, blue, and brown. The underside has the impressed marks 7069, and 49. This is European Art Pottery majolica art pottery, probably from Austria or Czechoslovakia. This is fine antique majolica; earthenware that has an opaque tin glaze. This style includes production techniques whereby enamel glazes and decorations are hand applied and worked in stages upon a pottery form and fired several times in a kiln. The estimated date is early 20th Century, circa 1920. Is in very good condition; noting there are five faint line cracks, on the base exterior from the rim down, each is one inch and under; there is a minute chip on the inside back rim of the bottom, and a bit of various rust staining on the inside of the bottom (see photos). Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. It is noted that old majolica is not inherently “perfect” – pieces were still mold formed in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over. This is not damage- this is part of the history of old pottery and how it was made. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. Please note photos have been taken in indirect sunlight; therefore, reflections and lighting spots may appear, but do not necessarily indicate defects. Tall X 3.5 In. Wide X 5.0 In. If you see something wrong in a listing, please send me a message and let me know and I will address the situation accordingly. (Latin: “remember that you must die”) is the medieval Latin theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. It is related to the ars moriendi (“The Art of Dying”) and related literature. Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character, by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife.

Once upon a time, Colt Firearms made their own version of bakelite, a heat resistant early plastic for gun handles called Coltrock, aka Colt Rock, Colt Bakelite, Colt Plastic. Specialty items Colt made of this bakelite included buttons, cosmetic cases, and humidors/cigarette boxes, like this one, styled to look like a book, called, The Courtship of Lady Nicotine. Does it get more noir than this? These boxes are extremely scarce. BERNARD BLOCH Terracotta Humidor Jar Figural Top hat umbrella book monocle #393
Rare Antique BERNARD BLOCH Terracotta Tobacco Humidor Jar – Man Sitting Top Hat Figural man reacing a book and holding an umbrella. Perhaps a dandy from back in the day out bird watching with his monocle in place and a binocular? Pouch on his right side. Marked BB on Bottom (Bernard Bloch) 393 and also reads in German Vervielfaltigung Vorbehalten Identified as Phileas Fogg from the Jules Verne story AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS. Measures (inches): 13″ tall x 6″ wide x 7 deep. Condition – many paint chips on front cape of figure on upper and lower portion of piece, left front shoe was reaffixed at the spat, head and tophat scarf were reaffixed with a clean line break front to back with a chip on the left neck, and front rim of hat was also reaffixed and there is a piece of his right mutton chop that has been gone for years. There is also a chip on the top right of the top hat but coloring makes me think it is part of the original rather than a later chip? For a piece that is over 100 years old it is still a lovely work of terra cotta art and a lovely addition to any humidor collector. Bernard Bloch was a pre-eminent entrepreneur in the field of ceramic industry and established the famous factory B. Which, in 1920, was renamed to Eichwald Porcelain and Stove Factory Bloch & Co. The facility was based in, what was then, the city of Hohenstein (today Unín). It was characteristic of making richly decorated products with glossy colored glaze. The objects of both artistic and applied character were distributed throughout the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. These were coffee and tea sets of brown, green, red or bronze color, but also plates, vases and decorative tiles. In 1895, Bernard Bloch extended the field of his activities via purchasing the prosperous firm of C. Teichert (Meissen) based in Eichwald (today the city of Dubí) which was the first on the Czech territory to apply the blue motif of the co-called onion. Apart from porcelain and figural earthenware, Bloch introduced the production of siderite objects, tiles and tiled stoves. Bernard Bloch gained fame mainly by the production of figural tobacco containers and other tobacco products, characteristic of detailed and extremely refined processing. From the German city of Thuringen. After the war, in 1947, the facility was nationalized and affiliated to other porcelain factories as, for example, Royal Dux and Thun to form the company called Duchcovský porcelán (Duchcov Porcelain). The producers continued using the same logo as before the nationalization. In 1958, Duchcovský porcelán was transferred under Karlovarský porcelán (Carlsbad Porcelain). While prices are very competitive they are still mostly negotiable as some funds beat no funds for my class. Have a great day.
