

This beautiful antique painted terracotta tobacco holder is from Austria and dates to around 1880. It depicts a black King Charles Spaniel, as the breed looked back then, with a red collar and it is designed to function as a tobacco jar / humidor. Marked BB on the bottom for Bernhard Bloch of Austria during the late 19th century. These terracotta tobacco jars frequently took on figural forms, including various dog breeds. The piece demonstrates good wear consistent with its age and use, indicating its historical significance. These pieces are considered collectible art objects and command high prices, but this one especially as it is just so very, very cute and appealing.
