A charming antique Black Forest style hand carved wood bear tobacco humidor jar and pipe holder. Featuring a fully dimensional figure of a bear with glass eyes, standing on a rocky formed base, with a lidded basket strapped to his back. Signed on the base with initials K. In overall good antique condition with general wear commensurate with age and use, some signs of old repairs to the base and to the basket. Measures 11 ¾” height x 8 3/8″ length x 4 ½ deep. BEAR TOBACCO JAR MUSIC BOX. Black Forest Figural Wood Carved Humidor c. This is an Awesome BEAR TOBACCO JAR MUSIC BOX Black Forest Figural Wood Carved circa 1950. This tobacco jar music box. Is dark brown in color, with some decorative color accents, (photographed in natural light, the photos appear lighter than actual color). Is well modeled in deep relief with very good carving and detail. Depicts a seated bear carved in Black Forest style. Has an expressive face, a mouth with teeth, glass paperweight style eyes, ears straight up. Has a custom top, the head lifts open, and is fitted to the body; the base container, with a brass hinge, is the body of the bear with four outstretched paws; the base is hollowed out as a tobacco jar. Has a Thorens MUSIC BOX built into the base, which is activated by a string attached to the top; when the lid is opened the music box is activated- it plays There is No Place Like Home and Way Down Upon the Swanee River. The music box has been serviced, cleaned and oiled, and it works. Once the lid is closed the two songs stop after being played through. Has a round plinth elevated base with three small rounded feet; the underside has the winder key and access panel to the music box. Tall x 5.5 In. Wide x 6.5 In. The estimated date is circa 1950. The BEAR TOBACCO JAR MUSIC BOX Black Forest is in very good condition. Condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing. Overall, this work is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. In the 1800s the wood carving industry of Switzerland started in the town of Brienz. By the end of the 1800s it had become the driving force for this industry in Switzerland and Germany. Swiss wood carvers became world renowned and featured at many international exhibitions. In Europe, Black Forest carvings (wares) became a symbol of luxury and wealth. The finest pieces of Black Forest carving were often found in Royal collections and elite collectors homes (usually Victorian world travelers). Antique Hand Carved Black Forest Bear Tobacco Pipe Stand Holder. Black Forest hand-carved linden-wood hand-carved pipe tobacco holder stand modeled as hiking bear with walking stick and basket on his back, glass eyes. Holds up to 6 pipes. Tourists loved this carvings, and the art form became more well-known after exhibits of the work were shown at fairs like the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, the 1876 Centennial Exhibit in Philadelphia, the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair and the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. A similar stand is shown in the book entitled Swiss Carvings, The Art of the Black Forest by Arenski, Daniels and Daniels, published by The Antique Collectors Club in 2004. Good condition EXCEPT c. Rude repair to end of one pipe holder, damage to inside edge of one of the bear’s paws. Please examine all photos. Antique Swiss Black Forest Wood Carving Humidor Music Box Bear Glass Eyes Brienz c1920s. The box drawer/tray opens by pressing down on the button at the front of the ashtray. We see a figural wood carved bear atop the box, with the match holder behind him. The bear has glass eyes. This piece is also a music box. It plays Balalaika and Mariandl. The underside shows a label with the song titles, and a label from E. BRIENZ, Stock #, Original cost. We also see 285, which looks to be a previous price. Above the winder and 285, on the edge, we see a stamped letter R or B. The piece measures 6 1/4″ tall, 4 1/4″ wide (with bear’s nose), and 4 7/8 deep. This piece is part of the unsold, uncirculated carving stock from the famous JOBIN carving emporium in Brienz, Switzerland. Jobin will be closing its doors soon, permanently, so collect these items while you can. Very good used/antique condition with great patina. Functional parts work properly. Antique Swiss Black Forest Wood Carving Humidor Standing Bear Glass Eyes Tree Trunk c1900. This is carved from wood by one of the master carvers of Brienz, Switzerland and dates to circa 1900. We see a figural standing bear on top of a simulated tree stump. The top of the stump opens toward the rear to reveal the tobacco storage. The bear has glass eyes. Very good used condition with great patina. This is an antique item which may show very mild signs of age wear, but currently shows no damage or repair.
