Germany Footed Humidor – R. Prussia – Reinhold Schlegelmilch, Tillowitz, Germany, Factory – Green Wreath Mark. Germany Humidor, beautiful porcelain. Medallion mold, embossed star decoration, wide black borders with gold stenciled designs, green RS Germany Tillowitz mark. RS Germany is part of the wording in marks used by the Tillowitz, Germany, factory of Reinhold Schlegelmilch from 1914 until about 1945. Reinhold Schlegelmilch produced what collectors consider to be R. Prussia (RSP for short) in his factory in Suhl, Germany, from the late 1800s through World War I. Following the war, the factory moved to Tillowitz, Germany, and after World War II the factory once again shifted venue, this time to Poland. I acquired this piece in 1993, and couldn’t determine what it was because of the odd hole inside the lid. I sent some photos and a letter asking the late Mary Frank Gaston for help with identification. She replied with the identification and a request for permission to use my photos in her next edition of her reference book Collector’s Encyclopedia of R. See page 109, Plate 337 of the Fourth Series. The humidor measures approximately 8″ tall including the lid, 5-1/2″ tall without the lid, 5-1/4″ across the opening, and the hole in the lid for a moistened sponge is 2″ across. The sponge disperses moisture as well as absorbs it, maintaining a consistent level of humidity. There are some stains on the inside bottom (see photos), but it’s in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or other concerns. Because this piece is very old and very delicate porcelain, it will be carefully wrapped, packaged and insured for mailing.

Beautiful and Rare Antique RS Prussia Tobacco Humidor with Open Bottomed Lid to Hold Moistened Sponge. This delicate porcelain piece offers a handpainted floral design though it is somewhat understated and masculine, with gilded and green leafy plants. The back of the piece is different from the front. There are also subtle, tiny daisies in the pink at the bottom of the canister on the front display. The canister and lid both have fancy scrollwork, and the lid curves upward, bringing interest to the piece. There is an incised snowflake mark on the bottom of the humidor, confirming its authenticy. This piece has been dated by experts on RS Prussia to have been manufactured between 1880s – 1900s. There has not been (and I will not seek) a formal appraisal. 5 7/8″w x 6.5″h (from base to tip of handle). Condition is used, but the piece is in unbelievably wonderful shape. No chips on the canister or lid. No cracks on the canister. There are two tiny hairline cracks on the underside of the lid (see last picture). The painted flowers and leafy plants on both sides are not worn. The gilding is mostly worn on the lid and lid handle, as would be expected with age and use. PLEASE NOTE: The piece is very light.
