PALMER COX CIGAR SMOKING BOY Tobacco Jar Antique Pottery Humidor c1920. This is a rare antique Austrian Majolica Tobacco Jar known as the PALMER COX CIGAR SMOKING BOY Tobacco Jar. This two-piece tobacco jar, or humidor, is modeled in deep relief. And glaze are very well done. The subject is a well-attired CIGAR SMOKING BOY Tobacco Jar. This well-dressed boy wears a toboggan cap, dressy jacket with vest and turned up shirt collar. He is smoking a cheroot cigar. The toboggan cap with tassel forms the lid top of the tobacco jar. The underside of the lid has a recessed area to put a damp sponge and is nicely fitted on the matching base. On the top, the inside is unglazed, and underside is unglazed; the bottom rim edge is glazed. On the base, the top rim is glazed, the inside is unglazed, the underside base is unglazed, and the underside bottom is unglazed. The tobacco jar has colors including a background decorated with lavender, blue, green, tan, light brown, manganese, and off-white. The estimated date is circa 1920. The underside has the impressed marks 8,3, an illegible four numbers, and black symbol. This PALMER COX CIGAR SMOKING BOY Tobacco Jar Antique is in very good condition. Condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, typical crazing, minor glaze losses, firing flaws, and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. It is noted that old majolica is not inherently “perfect” – pieces were still mold formed in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over. This is not damage- this is part of the history of old pottery and how it was made. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. Please note photos have been taken in indirect sunlight; therefore, reflections and lighting spots may appear, but do not necessarily indicate defects. Dimensions: 5.0 In. Tall X 3.6 In. Wide X 3.5 In. This tobacco jar is a famous Palmer Cox Brownie. Brownies were first drawn in 1883 by Palmer Cox. Brownies were characters in a series of children’s stories. 1887’s “The Brownies”, their book, was a collection of fourteen Brownies stories, the first Brownie book published. They are characterized by large round eyes, downturned mouths, and skinny legs. Toys, books, dinnerware, figurines, and other objects were made with the Brownies as part of the design. This is European Art Pottery majolica art pottery, probably from Austria or Czechoslovakia. This style includes production techniques whereby enamel glazes and decorations are hand applied and worked in stages upon a pottery form and fired several times in a kiln.
