Depicts a seated figure of a fabulous Large Wooden BULLDOG TOBACCO JAR or HUMIDOR. Is dark brown in color (photographed in natural light, the photos appear lighter than actual color). Is made of hardwood, carved in deep relief with excellent detail and modelling. Has an excellent patina. Has glass paperweight eyes, a very realistic wrinkly face, a closed mouth with teeth with underbite, and has floppy ears. Opens in the middle of the neck. Has a brass hinge on the back of the neck. Has a light wood-stained liner inside top lid and on inside base body. Has the word GERMANY impressed on the back underside bottom near the tail. Tall x 5.2 In. Wide x 9.0 In. In the 1800’s the wood carving industry of Switzerland started in the town of Brienz. By the end of the 1800’s it had become the driving force for this industry in Switzerland and Germany. Swiss wood carvers became world renowned and featured at many international exhibitions. In Europe, Black Forest carvings (wares) became a symbol of luxury and wealth. The finest pieces of Black Forest carving were often found in Royal collections and elite collector’s homes (usually Victorian world travelers).
