Seated Monkey Tobacco Jar Humidor Majolica Anthropomorphic Austria Circa 1900
A glazed ceramic tobacco jar in the shape of a seated monkey holding a pipe, early 1900s. The textured surface has washes of tinted glazes including charcoal on the body, and rose and yellow on the monkey’s outfit with sage green on the back. The pipe stem is black and the bowl is tan/yellow. The lid is comprised of the head and shoulders. The underside is impressed with “Austria” and the numbers “11730”, “12” and 13. The jar measures appx 10 inches high x 7 ½ inches wide x 6 ½ inches deep. Weighs 2 pounds 9 ounces very sturdy! Condition: Good overall, however on the back left shoulder there are 2 chips, one in the rose colored area and one in the sage colored area (see photos). This is not seen from the front. Above the monkeys right eyebrow, a tiny bit of the glaze has come off (hard to see) and on the stem of the pipe there is a hairline crack and tiny chip. A fabulous piece to display or add to your collection. This is a previously owned item. Please see all photos for a complete description of condition you will receive. Bernard Bloch was a pre-eminent entrepreneur in the field of ceramic industry and established the famous factory B. Which, in 1920, was renamed to Eichwald Porcelain and Stove Factory Bloch & Co. The facility was based in, what was then, the city of Hohenstein (today Unín). It was characteristic of making richly decorated products with glossy colored glaze. These were coffee and tea sets of brown, green, red or bronze color, but also plates, vases and decorative tiles. In 1895, Bernard Bloch extended the field of his activities via purchasing the prosperous firm of C. Teichert (Meissen) based in Eichwald (today the city of Dubí) which was the first on the Czech territory to apply the blue motif of the co-called onion. Apart from porcelain and figural earthenware, Bloch introduced the production of siderite objects, tiles and tiled stoves. Bernard Bloch gained fame mainly by the production of figurative tobacco containers and other tobacco products, characteristic of detailed and extremely refined processing. From the German city of Thuringen. After the war, in 1947, the facility was nationalized and affiliated to other porcelain factories as, for example, Royal Dux and Thun to form the company called Duchcovský porcelán (Duchcov Porcelain). The producers continued using the same logo as before the nationalization. In 1958, Duchcovský porcelán was transferred under Karlovarský porcelán (Carlsbad Porcelain).
