This is a wonderful old Dutch humidor made in Holland by Royal Goedewagen which has been in business for over 400 years! This humidor dates to the 1930’s-40’s and has scenes of a Dutchman and his boat, Windmills, and wooden shoes. The body is porcelain and the top is made of brass. It is in great condition. Here is some history on the maker… History of Royal Goedewaagen; four centuries of tradition in ceramics. 1610: The People’s Ceramic Works’De Star’ of the Gouda based family De Jong, produced simple ceramic items for daily use, which were generally glossy glazed items in yellow or green. 1779: Dirck Goedewaagen becomes a part of an important Ceramic Pipe-Makers Guild in the city of Gouda. Tobacco, imported through the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC), is being smoked increasingly. Tobacco pipes and paraphenalia become a mainstay. Later, Dirck’s grandson, Pieter, also a pipemaker, falls in love with a daughter of the De Jong family and marries her. 1853: Pieter Goedewaagen buys the’De Star’ factory from his father-in-law, Aart de Jong. This becomes the basis of today’s Goedewaagen Company. More take-overs follow, making Goedewaagen the largest pipe factory in the Netherlands. 1923: By acquiring’De Distel’, another Amsterdam-based ceramic factory, Goedewaagen acquires outstanding specialists in producing Jugendstil and Art Deco style ceramics. Famous designs from the world famous designers – Bert Nienhuis, Carel Adolph Lion Cachet and Willem Hendrik van Norden – are classic examples from this period. The newly granted’Royal’ charter in the 1930’s make Royal Goedewaagen a forerunner in Dutch Ceramic production.
