The lid is decorated with sculptural brass serpents in relief – a dramatic and uncommon design element. The front features an elaborate, organic-form brass escutcheon surrounding the keyhole. The interior is fully oak-lined, retaining its original natural wood surface. No modern lining has been added. The underside of the lid shows age wear and adhesive residue from what may have once been a lining or humidification element.
